Wisdom Teeth Removal

Have you noticed a few new teeth in the back of your mouth? Or do you have a new pain radiating on the side of your face? If your wisdom teeth have come in, it is important to speak to your dentist to find out if they need to be removed. Dr. Henderson and his Carthage, MS, team can provide wisdom tooth removal to resolve issues or prevent complications in the future.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are permanent teeth that typically don't come in until you are 17-25 years old, making them the last permanent teeth to appear. Some patients may not have any oral issues when their wisdom teeth appear, and some may never get them at all. However, for those who are experiencing pain or noticing a shift in their teeth, it is best to get them looked at to see about removal.

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

/

Often when wisdom teeth come in, they do not have enough room to erupt from the gums and grow normally, so they become impacted. An impacted wisdom tooth needs to be removed as it can be painful, cause infection, or cause problems with the surrounding teeth.

The Removal Process

The first step as a patient is to always meet with your dental professional to see if removal is the best option.

Anesthesia

Your dentist or oral surgeon will apply anesthesia to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

Incision

They will then make an incision in the gum to expose the wisdom tooth. Depending on the type of impaction, your dentist may also need to incise bone tissue.

Removal

Your dentist will then either divide the tooth into sections and extract it in pieces or remove the tooth as a whole.

Cleaning

After the wisdom tooth removal, your dentist will clean the area to get rid of any debris.

Stitches

Depending on the severity of the impacted tooth, sometimes stitches are necessary.

Begin Healing

To promote the formation of a blood clot, your dentist will layer thick gauze over the wound.

Aftercare

After the wisdom teeth removal, your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for the treatment site and prevent further damage to the area. Follow all instructions to ensure a speedy recovery.

Dry Socket Information

/

A dry socket occurs when the blood does not properly clot, or the clot gets dislodged from the wound, leaving the bone exposed. It is very painful and needs to be treated by your dentist. You will be required to rinse the area and apply a medicinal paste to protect the exposed bone.
